Open auditions are held every May and August at Muskegon Community College. All orchestral instruments are welcome and encouraged to audition. Students with at least one to two years of experience through college sophomores who are members of school music ensembles are eligible to participate. Scheduled auditions are required.
Advanced student violinists will also have the opportunity to audition separately for the position of concertmaster. This position is designated as a tuition-free position. Students must be advanced violinists in eighth-grade or above in order to audition.
The Youth Symphony Program is also looking for students to join the Debut Strings Ensemble. Launched in 2012, Debut Strings is a program intended for students who have not yet played in a large orchestra ensemble. This group calls for students who have strong note reading skills and at least two years prior instruction. Debut Strings will perform at WMYS concerts. The program is lead by Annette Henry, violinist and an active performer, teacher and conductor.
