West Michigan Symphony Announces the Formation of a Children’s Choir and Fall Auditions

Muskegon, Michigan, August 21, 2013 – West Michigan Symphony is forming a Children’s Choir and has announced auditions will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

The Children’s Choir will allow WMS to perform orchestral works that include children’s voices and to offer choral training and experience to school children throughout the Lakeshore. The Choir will focus on establishing a foundation of vocal technique, musical literacy and musicianship through quality children’s choir literature. Members will have opportunities to participate in the Symphony’s annual holiday concerts and will present two independent concerts throughout the year.

The Choir is open to boys and girls ages 8-11. Members will be selected through an audition process held each spring and fall. The auditions for the inaugural 2013 season will be held on Sept. 10 beginning at 6 p.m. Audition times must be scheduled. No prior choir experience or preparation is required to audition.

Rehearsals will be held Tuesdays from mid-September through March from 6-7:30 pm in the West Michigan Symphony at The Block, located at 360 W. Western Avenue, 2nd floor, in Muskegon.

The ensemble will be directed by Beth Slimko, an experienced music teacher and choral director. Slimko currently directs the North Muskegon Public School choir program and is vocal music specialist for elementary music.

There is an annual participation fee of $200 that covers materials and a performance t-shirt. Need-based financial assistance is available. Applications and choir forms will be available at the audition.

Those interested in fall auditions or would like more information for the Children’s Choir should contact Karen Vander Zanden, WMS director of education, at 231-928-5738 to arrange an audition time.
