More than 40 young musicians featured in Debut Strings concert
Muskegon, Michigan, March 21, 2018 — Music from Bach to The Beatles will be featured by the 40-plus young musicians of Debut Strings, performing in concert at The Block in downtown Muskegon this Sunday afternoon. A program of West Michigan Symphony and The Block, Debut Strings is a student orchestra for beginning and intermediate level players. The students are selected via auditions and come with at least two years’ prior playing experience. Directed by Angela Corbin, Debut Strings rehearses weekly throughout the fall and spring and performs two concerts annually at The Block in downtown Muskegon.
The concerts will be held at 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday, March 25 in The Block, 360 W. Western Avenue in Muskegon. Selections on the program include Bach’s Chorale and Minuet and excerpts from the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3; Astor Piazolla’s Libertango; “Eleanor Rigby” by The Beatles; “Viva la Vida” by the rock group Cold Play; and “You Raise Me Up” by the Irish band Secret Garden (popularized in the U.S. by Josh Groban’s 2003 recording).
Debut Strings gives young musicians the opportunity to expand their skills and gain more individualized attention than they can receive in a typical orchestra class. The additional performance opportunity builds confidence and comfort level in playing in front of an audience. The program complements and reinforces existing school music programs and private lessons.
In addition to directing Debut Strings, Angela Corbin is the Orchestra Director at North Muskegon Public Schools. She earned her Masters in Music Education from Michigan State University. She has studied violin with Minghuan Xu at Grand Valley State University. She has also studied with Jean Manning of Muskegon and Stacey Woolley of the Cincinnati Symphony. As a private and class music instructor for over fifteen years, teaching music through string instruction has been one of Angela’s deepest passions.
