West Michigan Symphony Concert Features Iconic Superhero Movie Music

Muskegon, MI —  One of West Michigan Symphony’s (WMS) core mantras is Classical Music for Everyone—and how better to show it than with an evening of music from great iconic movies like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and others? The scores came from the pens of two legendary names in show biz: John Williams and Danny Elfman. The program will also feature music by two great composers who inspired them: Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird and Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet. Led by Music Director Scott Speck, the concert will take place at 7:30pm Friday, January 30 at the Frauenthal Center, 425 W. Western Avenue in Muskegon. For tickets, starting at $19 for adults, $10 for students, visit westmichigansymphony.org or call 231.727.8001, or visit the Frauenthal Center box office.

In addition to an out-of-this-world concert experience, the WMS invites guests to suit up for an epic adventure! Ticket holders are encouraged to participate in the first ever Superheroes Costume Contest during the Superheroes at the Symphony concert. Guests are encouraged to arrive in capes, masks, or any comic-inspired flair that sparks one’s heroic alter ego. For everyone’s safety, please leave all prop weapons at home. Judges will be on hand pre-concert 6:30-7:25pm, and during intermission in the W. Western Ave Lobby. The contest is open to all ages, with prizes ready for the most astonishingly heroic ensembles.

This concert experience is sponsored by Harbor Steel & Supply and Raymond James & Associates of Downtown Muskegon; Mike and Kay Olthoff are the 2025-2026 Season Sponsors, and Blue Lake Public Radio is the Media Sponsor.

The Superheroes at the Symphony concert also kicks off a weeklong Community of Heroes Celebration recognizing police officers, firefighters and their families through art, music, sports and community recognition. First responders will be honored from the stage, with dinner provided beforehand for over 100 police and fire personnel and their guests. Additional events are being held on Thursday, February 5 at the Muskegon Museum of Art, in conjunction with the opening of its exhibition POW! The Art of Comics; as well as the Muskegon Lumberjacks annual Mascot Night game on Friday, February 6.

Audience members and the general public are invited to learn more about the Superheroes at the Symphony concert at a free Lunch ‘n Learn, including complimentary lunch, at 12 noon Wednesday, January 28 at The Block, 360 W. Western Avenue. Sponsored by Embark Financial Partners, the event will be hosted by Music Director Scott Speck and includes Q & A and conversations with musicians from the orchestra.

Free shuttle transport is available from Muskegon Farmer’s Market to the door of the Frauenthal, and back again after Friday night’s concert. A post-concert gathering is held in the lower-level Frau Lounge, an opportunity for the audience to mingle with conductor and musicians. Beverages, desserts and charcuterie are available for purchase.
