“Tim. Jazz. Kabobs.” August 22 Concert at The Block Explores the Spontaneity of Jazz
Muskegon, Michigan, Aug. 11, 2014 – Local jazz drummer Tim Froncek opens the 2014-15 season at West Michigan Symphony’s cool, intimate performance space, The Block, Friday, Aug. 22 with a concert that explores the spontaneity of jazz performance.
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. August 22 at The Block, which is located on the second floor of 360 W. Western Ave. in downtown Muskegon. Doors and bar open at 6:30 p.m. Kabobs will be served.
“I have always been interested in jazz music,” Tim says, “because of the beat, the groove. That’s what drew me to drums.” In comparing the performance of classical music to jazz, he comments that he enjoys the spontaneity of jazz performance. “In jazz,” he says, “you are trying to recreate the written music, but also create something new at the same time.”
Tim and his friends Terry Lower on piano, Rob Hartman on acoustic bass, and Chris Bickley on saxophones, will perform standards from Duke Ellington, songs in the style of the Oscar Peterson Trio, and Brazilian Bossa Nova “Corcovado” (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars.)
Earning his moniker of the “busiest drummer in West Michigan,” Tim is a professor of jazz studies at Grand Valley State University, faculty for Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and is the director of the jazz band at Muskegon Community College. Tim also performs locally, tours internationally, and leads his own big band in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
