Cabaret. Diva. Meatballs. West Michigan Symphony Presents Second Program at The Block featuring Marcy Richardson, Soprano, Friday July 26

Muskegon, Michigan—Marcy Richardson is hardly your stereotypical soprano. And the West Michigan Symphony’s newest performance venue, The Block, is hardly your typical performance space, a fitting place to showcase this Grosse Pointe, Michigan, New York City-based diva.

This casual, cabaret style performance is the second program the West Michigan Symphony will present at The Block, a 148-seat venue at 360 W. Western Ave., Muskegon. The performance will be Friday, July 26. The bar opens and meatballs will be served at 6:30 p.m. The 90-minute performance including intermission will begin at 7:30 p.m. with Richardson accompanied by WMS principal pianist Kelly Karamanov.

The New York Times described Richardson as “a true stage animal with a passion for baroque, sophisticated musical theater and contemporary music…” and has hailed her for her “clear, pealing voice.” The lighthearted program she said she laced together reflects her high spirits and diversity and will feature everything from Bernstein’s “I Hate Music,” to Weill’s Broadway hit “That’s Him,” and other favorites by Purcell, Puccini, Handel and several New York theater composers she has recorded and/or premiered.

Richardson has performed in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, in everything from opera to musical theater to contemporary music. She got her start in dance and theater and has appeared in roles in shows including Cabaret, Kiss Me Kate, Into the Woods, Oklahoma!, and more.

“I would describe my show as a “Marcy sings it all” cabaret,” Richardson said. “It will showcase a wide range of genres and styles, baroque, jazz, opera, musical theater, new music, you name it. Well, except for rap and pop. No one’s ever hired me for that. By the end of my program, I’m hoping the audience will have an insider’s look at what goes into pursuing music, enjoy the whirlwind of styles, and have fun getting to know me in the process.”
